Fingerprint SystemStreamlines Resort

The Sunday River Resort in Vermont has chosen fingerprint authentication software from Digital Persona, Redwood City, Calif., to reduce buddy check-ins and stolen, forgotten or borrowed passwords or card keys.
The fingerprint-based authentication system provides the resort a simple way to reduce security and access problems. American Ski Company, which runs the resort, performs a one-time registration, enabling the employee's fingerprint to provide access across the network.
Passwords and user logins originally proved challenging for seasonal workers, says Carol Bodem, vice president of information technology operations for American Ski Company. Fingerprints, however, are not subject to periodical password changes.
“The program has streamlined the process and enhanced security. It is a rare security solution that is appreciated by the users,” Bodem says. “Cashiers love it, because they do not have to remember passwords.”
Digital Dining, a food-and-beverage program for cashiers, uses the fingerprint as a log-in and for opening the cash drawer. “The fingerprint makes people responsible, since the only way to get in the drawer is your fingerprint,” says Jim Largess, vice president of food and beverage of Sunday River Resort. “It eliminates the number of possibilities that could have gone wrong with the cash drawers.”
Largess says that in the future the program may be used for employee discounts. Bodem says it could be expanded to all employees for logging into other resources.
