THE COLLECTION is a luxury car dealership in Coral Gables, Fla., located in a state-of-the-art, three-story, 350,000-square-foot facility. It is home to one of the world's finest collection of cars, ranging in price from $30,000 to more than $200,000.

Massimo Iosa Ghini, an Italian designer for international automotive and furniture companies such as Ferrari and Fiorucci, worked in concert with architect Luis Revuelta to create a building that marries the simplicity of modernism with the richness of the Mediterranean Revival style that characterizes Miami's Coral Gables area.

The distinctive facility houses seven world-class auto franchises under one roof including Maserati, Aston Martin, Ferrari, Porsche, Jaguar, Audi and Lotus. The first four floors of the building house The Collection and a facility garage that is open to the public. The additional four floors contain offices.

The building is secured by an extensive access control system, including biometric readers and integrated CCTV and communications systems. The CCTV portion is based on a Pelco Matrix CM-9740 in 16×112 configurations with 105 color Panasonic cameras plus five integrated pan/tilt/zoom (PTZ) color dome cameras.

The system has five monitoring and control locations installed in various management offices. Panasonic digital video recorders capture the surveillance images.

The security system contractor for this project was Glanz Technologies Inc. (GTI). “All building access points and elevators are controlled by Kantech readers, which are interfaced with Aiphone communication products,” says Mark Glanz of GTI. “Aesthetics was a consideration as well as elevator interface. We needed to install substations inside the elevator cabs, behind the panel with the ability to activate an elevator's CALL light.”

The entire system is networked with five workstations that control all access points to the facility, lock and unlock showroom doors on schedule and control elevators.

“By using the Aiphone equipment with relays, we can trigger a video switcher to display the camera covering that intercom, successfully integrating access control, intercom and video,” Glanz says.

Aiphone substations are located throughout the facility. Used in conjunction with an electronic access control system, they enable staff and visitors to communicate directly with security personnel if needed and allow security officers to efficiently communicate with both tenants and vendors within the building.

John Jolley of Trammell Crow Co., is the property manager for the facility. Jolley was instrumental in implementing this elaborate security system. With his years of experience in building management as a guide, he worked closely with Glanz and GTI to create a custom setup that optimizes the various systems in the building. The pair also worked with Harvey Keiser, president of Miami-based distributors Sunshine Wire and Connector. Installation of the custom system took six months.
