RFID-Based Security and Tracking at Virginia Ports
Jan 1, 2007 12:00 PM
To enhance the security and efficiency of cargo container shipments at its terminals, the Virginia Port Authority has chosen Radio Frequency Identification-based (RFID) technology information services from Savi Technology, Sunnyvale, Calif..
Savi Networks will deploy a system compatible with international standards (ISO18000-7) at Norfolk International Terminal, Newport News Marine Terminal and Portsmouth Marine Terminal. The network automatically tracks the location and security status of RFID-tagged containers. Savi's Web-based managed information service also will be used to deliver real-time information collected by the network infrastructure.
“In an era of heightened security concerns, we're glad to help Savi employ its technology at our terminals,” says J. Robert Bray, executive director of the Virginia Port Authority.
The SaviTrak information service is integrated with an open technology platform that receives and processes real-time data feeds from standards-based RFID technologies as well as other Automatic Identification and Data Collection (AIDC) technologies, such as barcodes, EPC-compliant passive and Global Positioning Systems (GPS) used to track ships and trucks transporting ocean containers.

APC Physical Infrastructure Management PlatformInfraStruXure Central from American Power Conversion (APC) enables organizations to conduct real-time monitoring of their physical infrastructure devices contained in a range of locations, from small wiring closets to large data centers. The platform acts as a repository for critical power, cooling and environmental data to provide immediate event notification to users so they can quickly assess and resolve device failures. An add-on surveillance software module can capture a visual record of people who enter a critical area and what they do while they are there. |
