USER: Little Rock National Airport

TECHNOLOGY: Fingerprint Readers,Smart Cards

Little Rock National, the 79th largest commercial service airport in the nation, handling about 2.6 million passengers annually, has installed a security system featuring fingerprint readers and contactless smart card technology for approximately 5,000 users.

Bioscrypt Inc., Toronto, supplied the fingerprint readers equipped with integrated iCLASS 13.56 MHz read/write contactless smart card technology from HID Corp., Irvine, Calif. The technology helps restrict access to high-profile sites within the airport. The reader stores fingerprint templates directly on iCLASS contactless smart cards.

“Airports have tested different types of biometric technologies in an effort to comply to the proposed recommendations by the Transportation Security Administration (TSA),” says Bioscrypt's Julia Webb. “Fingerprinting [should] be the primary technology deployed for airports in 2004.”

Little Rock National is the major link in the commercial air transportation system for a large majority of the State of Arkansas. It attracts passengers from a number of surrounding states. The airport's latest improvement is a $30 million parking deck, which is connected to the terminal via skybridge.
