With more than 6,000 employees, the New York Department of Environmental Protection's (DEP) staff of engineers, lab workers and support teams manages the entire New York City water supply.

DEP security director Frank Munari has awarded a contract for an estimated nine-month project to upgrade his Queens facility, to Controlled Access LLC, Maple Shade, N.J.

Under the leadership of general manager Casey Guagenti, Controlled Access set out to craft the upgrade, while ensuring there would be little or no lapse of security while the upgraded security system is being installed.

The security system upgrade includes enterprise DVRs, proximity readers, sophisticated badge printers, equipment racks, LCD displays and video intercoms.

Workstations will be connected to a new security LAN providing real-time alarm and status information. Proximity card readers will replace existing magstripe card readers.

The new system will also provide digital video recording and management for more than 120 cameras and the security LAN will provide access to both live and recorded video for security post workstations throughout the facility.

“Now, the DEP will have the ability to take on other sites within the state and manage the whole process remotely,” Munari says.
