Have you considered the insider threat?
Only 43 percent of companies have implemented e-mail and instant messaging security to stop insiders from revealing confidential data, according to an information security survey conducted by research firm Aberdeen Group. “Most IT organizations view messaging security as an inbound threat centered on preventing spam, malware and viruses from entering corporate networks…best-in-class companies are also addressing the risk of outbound information leaks,” the report says.
Detecting threats is the easy part — but can you prevent them?
59 percent of companies believe they can detect a data breach, but 63 percent believe they cannot prevent one, according to a survey of 853 U.S.-based information security professionals prepared by the Ponemon Institute, a privacy and security research firm. High false-positive rates, ineffective policy enforcement and overly costly leak prevention technologies are a big part of the problem.
