Violence in the workplace is the number one concern of security managers in America's largest corporations, according to a survey of Fortune 1000 companies.

The Top Security Threats survey, conducted by Pinkerton, a security solutions firm, places workplace violence ahead of security concerns such as hacking into Internet/intranet web sites, fraud, employee selection and employee theft.

This is the third consecutive year that workplace violence has been rated as the number one concern of security managers who have taken part in the survey.

According to the Workplace Violence Institute, each workday an estimated 16,400 threats are made at work, and 723 workers are attacked while on the job. Also, more than 43,000 workers are harassed on the job.

Internet/intranet security placed second on the list of concerns of security managers.

According to the survey, the top 10 issues of greatest concern to corporate security managers are as follows:

  1. Workplace violence
  2. Internet/intranet security
  3. Employee selection/screening concerns
  4. Fraud/white-collar crime
  5. Business interruption/disaster recovery
  6. General employee theft
  7. Hardware/software theft
  8. Drugs/alcohol in the workplace
  9. Unethical business conduct
  10. Property crime
