Twenty-five school buses from the St. Lucie (Fla.) County Public Schools have been equipped with the BusSecure mobile digital recording system from GE Interlogix Video Systems Group, Corvallis, Ore.

The systems — designed for school buses, armored vehicles and law enforcement — record and store video inputs from one to four cameras mounted inside or outside the vehicle. To resolve incidents quickly, a digital video processor with 80 GB of removable storage lets recorded images be viewed in the field with a laptop or from a desktop PC.

“We needed to eliminate tapes and increase download dependability for our security officers,” says Dean Kesling, fleet maintenance officer for the school district. “The BusSecure system lets us eliminate tapes and VCRs, which were constantly breaking and needing service. Plus, we were spending too much time and manpower changing tapes and storing them.”

In all, the St. Lucie County Public Schools have 380 buses, which run 7 million miles each year, transporting 23,000 students. After implementing the BusSecure system on the first 25 buses, which include 20 buses equipped for exceptional children, additional BusSecure units will be added as new buses come into service.
