A large increase of space in the Corporate Security Operations Center has also facilitated implementation of the security system upgrades. “The Center will be completed this fall,” says Achenbach, “and will be more than 3,000 square feet. We'll have more space to operate the alarm and card access systems, along with our integrated video system. These systems are run through the company's IT network.”

In addition to system upgrades, Achenbach has also helped implement physical security improvements. There are four to five corporate FNNI facilities in Omaha, including the notable First National Tower (the Tower), a 40-story skyscraper which includes both FNNI offices and other business tenants. Upgrades at the Tower and the technology center are among the major physical security improvements at the company.

“One major security initiative driven by Achenbach was the addition of turnstiles to our Tower elevator lobbies, and the installation of Delta Barriers at the Tower parking garage and dock areas,” Miller says. He notes that Delta Barriers have also been placed at the data processing center.

The Tower lobby turnstiles have card readers and are coordinated with employee access levels and elevator banks, Achenbach explains. “We've restricted employee access to elevators in accordance with their access levels,” he says.

Employee management is, of course, a large part of Achenbach's job, and one he performs admirably, in the opinion of Miller. Achenbach manages a team of 11 in-house employees and approximately 50 uniformed contract security officers. He meets monthly with his staff and maintains an open door policy for everyone, according to Miller, who adds, “He has instituted several policies to assist with performance recognition and team building. In addition, he offers everyone the chance to become involved with ASIS.”

It's clear that Achenbach savors working both with technology and people. He finds the managerial aspects of his job particularly rewarding, and says he does like to support employees' involvement in the active Omaha ASIS chapter. “It's a very rewarding environment,” he says, “looking at the future of technology and trying to bring the best safety and security practices to our employees.”
