Innovation Corner: The Detection Section
Sep 1, 2007 12:00 PM
The possibility of new threats in the workplace suggests a need for new sensor technologies to provide early warning signals. Several recently announced new products are aimed at detecting various problems and alerting a timely response, including these:
Bosch ISN-SM-50 and ISN-SM-80
SUPPLIER: Bosch Security Systems Inc.,Fairport, N.Y. ▪ WHAT IT DETECTS: Seismic activity (explosives or attempted entry) in safes and vaults ▪ HOW IT WORKS: Patented SENSTEC sensor and micro-controller-based signal processing system evaluates a narrow frequency range. ▪ COMMENTARY: “The detectors provide superior catch performance and freedom from false alarms. The technology allows the detectors to be customized for use in multiple types of applications in concrete, steel or synthetic material to protect safes, ATMs, night deposits and strong room walls and doors.” — Tom Mechler, product marketing manager
Vulcain-Commercial Series
SUPPLIER: Gamewell-FCI, Northford, Conn., part of Honeywell's Life Safety Group ▪ WHAT IT DETECTS: Multiple gases, including vehicle emissions, refrigerants or explosives ▪ HOW IT WORKS: Can operate as either stand-alone units or can be networked to an installed base of fire alarms or building control systems ▪ COMMENTARY: “We've seen a growing number of jobs calling for an integrated means of monitoring indoor air quality. Whether it be a garage or office building, more of these facilities are requiring commercial-grade devices that can not only detect multiple hazardous gases, but also control indoor air quality.” — John Weaver, director of marketing.
7251DH Intelligent Air Duct Smoke Detector
SUPPLIER: System Sensor, St. Charles, Ill., also part of Honeywell ▪ WHAT IT DETECTS: Smoke ▪ HOW IT WORKS: Combines high-sensitivity laser sensor with duct smoke detection capability ▪ COMMENTARY: Can be used for workplace environments such as telecommunications facilities or data centers, where high sensitivity detection is required because of high airflow and/or several air changes per hour. Bell Canada uses the System Sensor product to protect its telecommunications rooms.

Today's New Product
APC Physical Infrastructure Management PlatformInfraStruXure Central from American Power Conversion (APC) enables organizations to conduct real-time monitoring of their physical infrastructure devices contained in a range of locations, from small wiring closets to large data centers. The platform acts as a repository for critical power, cooling and environmental data to provide immediate event notification to users so they can quickly assess and resolve device failures. An add-on surveillance software module can capture a visual record of people who enter a critical area and what they do while they are there. |
