Report gauges success in fire alarm business

Fire and security dealers, installers and service companies can gauge their fire alarm system service and installation procedures against industry benchmarks using a new report. The value of the market for testing and service of commercial fire alarm systems is valued at $580 million annually in the U.S. The fire service market can be a stand-alone and profitable venture and a bridge to new installation business, according to "Operating A Fire Alarm Service Business."

The report offers 80 pages of information targeted to fire and security company owners, managers, service schedulers, investors, purchasing agents, and sales and marketing managers. It was produced by FIREPRO Inc. and Sandra Jones and Co., and is the second in a series.

For instance, the study reports:

* average invoicing rate for fire alarm system service techs is $65 per hour; * average number of fire alarm system service calls is six per year, each lasting 2.75 to 3 hours; * the average commercial fire alarm system installation has fewer than 150 devices and 40 zones.

The report contains more than 40 charts covering benchmarking operational information such as billing efficiencies, fire system life cycles, invoicing rates, testing and installation times, system mix and revenue and marketing projections.

The report also evaluates areas such as market participation, market forces and threats, operation characteristics, invoicing rates, technician compensation and personnel qualification requirements.
