Community surveillance system popular in Maryland

Cortex Vision Systems, Research Triangle Park, N.C., and AHS Systems, Beltsville, Md., recently hosted a community conference on alternative crime prevention techniques. The conference was attended by various levels of Prince George's County, Md., law enforcement agencies, as well as a variety of community leaders. Discussion at the conference centered on recent partnerships between community and law enforcement using video surveillance equipment. Last year, the Baltimore suburb of Mount Rainier installed video cameras on public streets to fight crime. In April 1998, Queenstown Apartments, a Mount Rainier apartment complex, expanded the city's surveillance to include its 1, 052 units on the western edge of the city. Mount Rainier Police chief John Thompson, who spoke at the conference, encouraged the use of more surveillance systems within the community, citing the success of the existing installations. Also at the conference, Cortex demonstrated its e.clips system, a digital-video, machine-vision-based surveillance system. For information, call 800-766-5723.
