IMAGEWARE SYSTEMS SECURES COLORADO'S NORAD FACILITY

NORAD U.S. Space Communications, Colorado, and Nellis Air Force Base, Nevada, have installed the Winbadge ID system from ImageWare Systems Inc., San Diego. Each facility will use the units to generate nearly 50,000 secure credentials per year, including military IDs, visitor badges and parking authorization documents.

A U.S. government customer has made an additional order for smart card technology from Datakey Inc., Minneapolis. The cards will be used as a smart ID badge to secure physical access to buildings and access to corporate networks.

Children's Hospital of Columbus, Ohio, William J. Backus Hospital, Norwich, Conn., and an unnamed healthcare facility in Canada have deployed fingerprint biometric technology from Identix Inc., Minnetonka, Minn., to aid in physical and IT authentication security. Additionally, an Identix facial recognition system installed in Virginia Beach, Va., for the Fourth of July holiday weekend passed acceptance criteria, with an 87 percent correct alarm rate in daylight hours.

Pague Menos, a Brazilian drugstore retailer, has chosen source tagging and other security solutions from Checkpoint Systems Inc., Thorofare, N.J. The contract covers 202 stores, and the installation will be completed by the end of November.

A gravel quarry in Pennsylvania has addressed theft problems and industrial access control with a security and asset management system from Axxess Inc., Dallas. The system uses small, battery-powered, automatically activated tags that transmit wireless messages to palm-sized receivers.

The Pinellas County (Fla.) Sheriff's Office has implemented the Police Image Capture System (PICS) from Viisage Technology Inc., Littleton, Mass. The PICS system allows law enforcement officials to enter pertinent information about arrested individuals.

New Jersey patrolman Greg Rule recently received the 3M/International Association of Anti Theft Investigators (IAATI) Vehicle Theft Investigation Award. He was given the award for using his knowledge of anti-theft Vehicle Identification Numbers from 3M, St. Paul, Minn., to solve the theft of several cars from a Mitsubishi dealership.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has completed funding for 180 eXaminer 3DX 6000 explosives detection systems from the Security and Detection Systems division of L-3 Communications, New York. The TSA has supplemented its initial $162 million with another $79 million.

The Shanghai Mint in China has deployed a digital surveillance system from Thakral Corp. Ltd., Singapore, to replace the existing analog security system.

The State of Florida's Department of Children and Families is using live scan fingerprinting systems from Cross Match Technologies Inc., Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., to further identify more than 45,000 children under its protective services.

The 2002 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., was under a blanket of security, thanks to several products donated by Lenel Systems International Inc., Rochester, N.Y. Lenel supplied an OnGuard system to make photo identification badges. The system also secured both stadiums housing the event.

A nuclear generating station in Quebec now keeps track of personnel and visitors and restricts access to sensitive areas using hand geometry readers from IR Recognition Systems, Campbell, Calif. The HandKey readers are used at entrance and exit turnstiles, and at boundaries of administration/radiological zones. Additionally, Aramark, a provider of outsourced services, has selected IR's HandPunch 4000 Time and Attendance Terminals, which use hand geometry for identity verification.

Marietta High School, Marietta, Ga., has completed installation of CyberDome day/night cameras and digital recorders and multiplexers from Kalatel, Corvallis, Ore., a GE Interlogix company. The digital CCTV system covers the 365,000-sq.-ft. main building, two additional buildings and 60 acres of athletic fields.

The 35,000-member Western Cherokee Nation now boasts membership cards made with the help of Eltron card printers from Zebra Technologies Corp., Vernon Hills, Ill. Additionally, the Connecticut Department of Motor Vehicles is using Eltron card printers to produce driver's licenses and state ID cards.

U.S. Steel, Pittsburgh, has installed a digital video surveillance system from Ionit Technologies, Northbrook, Ill. The system has monitoring capabilities from a desktop computer. In addition, several school districts in Ohio have deployed the Ionit PCcam system, which also includes monitoring capabilities from a desktop computer.

The Mesa Public School District (Ariz.) has deployed 13 Easi-Set transportable precast concrete buildings from Easi-Set Industries, Las Vegas, to ensure fire would not destroy a second storage building. The buildings are also bullet, wind and earthquake resistant.

The private Port of Sokhna, owned by Egyptian Container Handling Co., has ordered X-ray inspection systems from American Science and Engineering, Billerica, Mass. The port and industrial complex are located on the Red Sea, outside of Cairo.

Nova Southeastern University has selected digital recording and surveillance systems from NICE Systems, Ra'anana, Israel, for deployment on its Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., campus. The campus-wide security system is managed from a Security Operations Center, and there are plans to expand the systems to Nova's North Miami Beach and Kendall campuses.

The U.S. Department of the Treasury will deploy a new Electronic Treasury Enterprise Card for employees using fingerprint technology from Precise Biometrics, Lund, Sweden. Nearly 9,000 employees at the Treasury Department, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms, Bureau of Engraving and Printing, Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, Internal Revenue Service and Secret Service will be issued smart cards with the initial rollout.

Engelhard Corp., Iselin, N.J., has selected SecureScan Concealed Weapons Detection units from View Systems Inc., Lakewood, Colo., for deployment at its South Carolina facility. Additionally, the Ohio County (W. Va.) Security Committee has ordered more SecureScan systems for deployment at law enforcement and government facilities throughout the state.

ASIS International's Conference and Expo, held in early September in Philadelphia, was kept secure thanks to the work of SecPro Services Inc., Bellmawr, N.J., a company that provides security officers and emergency services.

A U.S. Navy facility in San Diego has begun installation of a Security Data Management System (SDMS) from VistaScape Technology Corp., Atlanta. The SDMS provides for the integration of data, monitoring and management of physical security sensors.
