Infrastructure Strategy Released

The Department of Homeland Security has released a 96-page report detailing a national strategy to protect the nation's critical physical infrastructure — roads, dams, hospitals, nuclear power facilities, water facilities and others — from terrorist attack.

The document outlines what the government and private sector should do to safeguard vital assets. In the private sector, businesses are encouraged to form networks to share information, while federal government would help state and local agencies conduct infrastructure vulnerability assessments.

The document supports a public-private sector partnership. The government will help companies protect workplaces by developing a certification process for background checks on employees and will share research about building security. The document also outlines the protection for national monuments, the nation's 80,000 dams and more than 2 million miles of pipeline.
