Representatives of the world's eight richest countries — the United States, Japan, Germany, France, Britain, Italy, Canada and Russia, known as the Group of Eight (G8) — met at a summit in mid-June that featured a host of opportunites for security suppliers.
The summit took place at an upscale resort on Sea Island off the coast of Georgia. Here's an overview of some of the security measures taken:
A number of 360-degree surveillance systems from IPIX Security, Oak Ridge, Tenn., were deployed at multiple locations to allow participant country security staffs and U.S. security agency representatives to maintain continuous video surveillance from the moment officials landed on the island through completion of the summit.
ADT Security Services Inc., Boca Raton, Fla., a part of Tyco Fire and Security, was selected to design and install a security system for the temporary offices of the White House staffers and G8 organizers in the King and Prince Resort Hotel on St. Simon Island, a few miles away from Sea Island.
Monitronics Intl., Dallas, provided security systems and 24-hour monitoring of key sites that were vital to the protection of participants of the event.
Special Response Corp., Hunt Valley, Md., provided both mobile and stationary tactical security personnel for deployment around the island.
VistaScape Security Systems, Atlanta, deployed its automated wide area surveillance solution as part of the security infrastructure for the summit. Remote-Technology Inc., Savannah, Ga., was the systems integrator responsible for deployment of video surveillance cameras and other physical security sensors.
The Georgia Emergency Management Agency (GEMA) chose the PIER Virtual Communications Center from AudienceCentral, Bellingham, Wash., to deliver security and safety information to local, state and federal security and public safety agencies.
