Standing Watch

SPOTLIGHT: PolEvator

Pole-mounted cameras provide users with a more reliable vantage point, boasting 360-degree surveillance views, over building-mounted cameras, according to product representatives at Videoalarm, Decatur, Ga., manufacturers of the PolEvator CCTV Lowering Pole. Moreover, because viewing fields are restricted for building-mounted cameras — sometimes by the buildings themselves — users have a difficult time identifying important details, such as facial features, and could miss them altogether.

Yet even with the benefits of installing pole-mounted systems, maintenance on cameras located as high as 21 ft. can be expensive and difficult. Videoalarm's PolEvator offers a more economical method of installing and servicing pole-mounted camera systems.

Originally introduced in 2001, the PolEvator, now available in three models, allows one technician to service and repair pole-mounted domes and housings using only a drill and a drill bit. The pole operates on a lubricated lowering system and can accommodate other devices in addition to cameras, such as lighting units. The pole is constructed of extruded aluminum with a black powder coat finish, is weatherproof and can withstand winds of up to 110 mph.

Cost-savings is a notable benefit that registers with many existing users. “With the PolEvator, users can realize a yearly savings of $1,510,” says Jonathan Herrera, Videoalarm marketing department leader. Contributing to the savings estimate are costs associated with bucket truck rentals, the hiring of technicians, slow response times, training requirements and administrative tasks.

“Aside from the dollar value, our customers also see the safety aspect of the product,” Herrera says. “With bucket trucks, technicians are working up high, and wind is a big factor. You can have some accidents.” The PolEvator strikes a balance between safety, convenience and cost-savings.

Current PolEvator installations include the Pennsylvania State University campus in State College, Pa.; John S. Stennis Space Center, in Mississippi, one of ten NASA field centers in the United States; and the Chesapeake and Delaware Canal (C&D Canal), which connects Chesapeake Bay with the Delaware River. People-Counting Device

CAPABLE OF INTEGRATING INTO NEW AND EXISTING EAS SYSTEMS

The newest component incorporates a people-counting sensor that detects and counts shoppers entering and leaving a property and time-stamps each count. Detailed reports can be generated for review once data is delivered, and the information can be merged with time-and-attendance systems to optimize staffing and marketing systems. Using the feature with the supplier's SmartEAS electronic article surveillance systems allows end-users to produce reports in two forms. One model allows authorized users to access reports via a network, and the other allows authorized users with an encrypted password to access reports via a secure Internet connection. The device can be used for new installations or retrofitted into existing systems. Network Video Recording Software

IMPLEMENTS ADVANCED REDUNDANCY STRATEGIES

The upgrade allows NVRs to work as failover backups if the primary NVR fails. The backup NVR can continuously record the same video in parallel to the primary NVR or automatically take over recording in the case of primary NVR failure. The backup NVRs can be located at a different physical location, can continuously monitor the primary NVRs to check availability and can synchronize configurations. The switching of the primary NVR to a backup unit can also be initiated manually to allow routine maintenance or fault investigation of the primary NVR. Sophisticated webs or chains of NVR redundancy can be implemented to allow the user to choose a level of redundancy based on a risk/cost analysis.
