Lenel OnGuard integrates intrusion detection, enhances reader supervision

OnGuard Integrated Intrusion

Lenel has long offered a command keypad as part of the OnGuard security management solution. Additional intrusion capabilities were recently introduced that make OnGuard an even more powerful combination access control-intrusion solution. The four function keys on the keypad can now be used to execute any user-defined key sequence as a macro for single-key arming, disarming, or viewing of faulted zones. New permission controls allow finer handling on both a per-keypad and a per-user basis. Programmable LCD display strings provide enhanced user prompting and situational awareness. Additional enhancements are planned for 2008. Because all enhancements can be downloaded from OnGuard, the hardware can acquire new capabilities without replacement. Also available are new readers that combine intrusion and access control features.

Open Supervised Device Protocol

In collaboration with several reader manufacturers and other suppliers, Lenel has spearheaded the development of a next-generation reader interface working standard. Going beyond the unidirectional Wiegand interface, OSDP (Open Supervised Device Protocol) provides continuous monitoring of reader status, and can immediately indicate a failed, missing, or malfunctioning reader. OSDP can also provide tamper indication for readers with onboard tamper detection capabilities. All signaling is done over two data lines plus ground, providing the ability to use four-conductor cable to both power the reader and send and receive data, with lower installation cost compared to the six conductors typically used for Wiegand. Some OSDP readers also provide user feedback via an LCD display, which is controlled by the Lenel panel through OSDP. OSDP is a non-priority interface standard that can be implemented without restriction. lenel.com

Hirsch Verification Station, Model RUU-201

The Verification Station from Hirsch Electronics delivers identity verification for the commercial and government/FIPS 201 sectors.

The Verification Station is one of the first true “edge readers” on the market and is almost certainly the most sophisticated, integrated, and secure edge reader available. The Security Industry Association recently recognized the product with the prestigious Special Achievement Award for outstanding technical innovation.

The Verification Station is one of the industry's first 4-factor authentication devices: card, code, fingerprint, and PKI certificate check. It is a multipurpose device that can be used at card issuance to verify the card recipient's identity before card handover, as a door/gate controller, as an enrollment device to populate a physical access control system with card data, and as a standalone or networked verification station to verify identities anytime, anywhere. The Verification Station integrates several technologies including a privacy-sensitive scrambling keypad, contact and contactless smart card readers, biometric fingerprint reader, and LCD display. The unit is IP-addressable and includes ports for door or other relay, Ethernet, Wiegand, RS-485 and RS-232.

The Verification Station is part of Hirsch's integrated, end-to-end solution for high security, identity management and regulatory compliance.
