American-led Group Earns 2004 Olympic Security Bid

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has awarded a contract to a consortium headed by San Diego-based Science Applications Intl. Corp. (SAIC) to oversee security operations for the 2004 Summer Olympic Games in Athens.
The consortium includes Siemens AG of Germany; General Dynamics, Falls Church, Va.; Honeywell International, Morristown, N.J.; Elbit Systems, Israel; and several Greek companies.
“This is a central factor needed for the organization of the games as it will allow the full deployment of security measures and the proper training of the people involved,” IOC president Jacques Rogge said.
The IOC was pressed to award the contract, fearing there might not be enough time to install and test the systems. The project includes the construction of a central security command and communications system.
