UPLINK Technologies, Marietta, Ga., will use its wireless transmission service and BellSouth Cellular Corp.'s cellular network to remotely monitor alarms at SunTrust banking locations. UPLINK will transmit alarm signals across BellSouth Cellular's network using BellSouth's Cellemetry service as the data communications program. The system will be tested at five to 10 Atlanta-area locations.
In two Chicago suburbs, an Ameritech Scan-Alert system is operating as a fire protection system, connecting multi-family and commercial dwellings to the local fire district. The system replaces dedicated circuits and operates over a standard telephone line, indicating outages and phone line problems.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs has contracted DataCard Corp. to provide card personalization systems and magnetic stripe card readers for its universal Veteran's Identification Card program. The VA will issue multi-purpose patient identification cards to more than 2.3 million veterans. The cards will feature cardholder photos, encoded magnetic stripes, bar codes, printed information and embossed data. Initially, they will be used to automate the application/registration process at VA healthcare facilities. Eventually, they will serve as a platform for other automated systems.
The Ministry of Defense in England has selected Watermark Magnetics from Thorn Secure Science International as the ID and secure building entry technology for its bases and offices. Watermark Magnetics is already used on Ministry of Defense ID cards and civilian staff passes. The Watermark technology embeds a pattern into a card's magnetic stripe.
RGB Spectrum, Alameda, Calif., has installed its SuperView 100 multi-video windowing system at the Los Angeles Automated Traffic Surveillance and Control Operations Center. SuperView 100 units are connected to large-screen projection displays in the center, allowing each to show four live videos simultaneously, a single video full screen, or mixed video and computer-generated graphics.
The operations center manages traffic within city limits and on the smart corridor of the Santa Monica Freeway. Using electronic surveillance and detection systems, engineers can observe traffic conditions at 16 locations simultaneously and pinpoint and solve problems.
