BagScan, a wireless baggage reconciliation system provided by Lufthansa Systems (North American Division), East Meadow, N.Y., has been incorporated at JFK International Airport for baggage handling operations. BagScan, which operates through a direct link to an airline's check-in system, uses barcode technology to receive, compare and match passengers' boarding and baggage data. At any time after passenger boarding and before a flight's departure, baggage and passenger data can be reconciled to assure that only authorized baggage has been loaded into an airplane's freight compartments. In the event that any luggage must be retrieved and off-loaded for security or other reasons, BagScan records the loading position of each bag, including its sequence number, container and container location.
