Applications: Kentucky school district installs Video Sentry

Jefferson County Public School District, Ky., will install the Video Sentry audio and video access control systems manufactured by Aiphone Corp., Bellevue, Wash. Jefferson County, with 96,000 students, has the largest school district in Kentucky.

Japan's Nuclear Power Engineering Corp. (NUPEC) has chosen the Navmaster III mobile robot, manu- factured by Cybermotion Inc., Roanoke, Va., to clear nuclear facility floors of any excess radiation. Oak Ridge National Labs acted as intermediary, integrating radiation detection instrumentation and installing special control software. According to John Holland, president and founder of Cybermotion, "Tedium and danger usually build a strong case for robotics."

International Fiber Systems (IFS), Newtown, Conn., will supply fiber optic digital video and data transmission for Boston's Central Artery/Tunnel project, known as the Big Dig. IFS will supply more than 330 digital video transmission links for the project's CCTV system and more than 350 datalinks for the traffic signalization network.

The city of Irvine, Calif., has installed CrossingGuard, a video-based automated red light enforcement system, manufactured by Nestor Traffic Systems Inc., Providence, R.I., an affiliate of Nestor, Inc. The city will use the system for 120 days, after which it may decide to install the system at four additional intersections. According to Sgt. Denny Jenner of the Irvine Police Department, "The department was looking for an innovative, technological solution to the problem of red light running. We chose this system because it requires minimal interaction from the police department.' In addition to recording and saving red-light violations, CrossingGuard signals the traffic controller to extend the red light for cross traffic while the violator runs the light.

Telexis Corp., Dayton, Ohio, has formed an alliance to allow NCR, Ottawa, Ontario, to sell, install and service Telexis digital video recording products to banks and other customers worldwide.

Lanzhou Public Transport, Lanzhou, China, has awarded Motorola, through its joint venture, Huamin Beijing Smartcard, the design and implementation of an automatic fare collection system (AFC). It will be the first automatic fare collection in Northern China. Lanzhou has a population of three million people. The AFC system will be implemented for the city's 800 buses. Commuters will be using Motorola's M-Smart mercury contactless smart cards. The first phase of the project is due to be completed by October 2000, and 120,000 monthly pass holders will receive the cards.

The National Election Board of Peru selected EasyPrint inkless fingerprint technology produced by Identicator Inc., Marina del Rey, Calif., to verify voter identity in Peru's presidential elections.
