Applications: North Carolina students work against violence

North Carolina middle and high schools are implementing a safety program developed by Pinkerton Services Group, a subsidiary of Pinkerton Inc., Westlake Village, Calif. The WAVE America program (Working Against Violence Everywhere), administered by Pinkerton Services Group, establishes a toll-free, 24-hour tip line and introduces an awareness and educational campaign based on the leadership principles of resolve, respect and responsibility. The program emerged from action items made by the Governor's Task Force on Youth Violence and School Safety. Pinkerton Services Group worked with the Center for the Prevention of School Violence and the departments of Public Instruction and Crime Control and Public Safety to form WAVE. The program will be implemented in more than 750 public schools and reach out to more than two million students, parents, guardians, teachers and administrators.

Instantel Inc., Kanata, Ontario, has announced that it has reached an agreement with Beverly Enterprises to supply Instantel's Watchmate product as the primary wander protection system for Beverly Health- care, the company's nursing home operations nationwide.

Matsuo Sangyo Co. Ltd., Fukuoka, Japan, has developed a hard-wired anti-shoplifting alarm device for display merchandise, which is being used by companies such as OfficeMax, Japan.

Corporate Security Management Inc., Orlando, Fla., has completed the first phase of its two-year plan to upgrade existing CCTV and security systems for Toys R Us. Remodeling plans include more than 400 Toys R Us locations in 1999 and continues through the year 2000. The first phase of the multi-million-dollar program was completed in November and included installation of more than 2,400 cameras.

Motorola Inc., San Jose, Calif., has signed a letter of intent with the Technical University of Berlin and the Transport Authority of Berlin to develop and implement a multi-application smart card system. The Motorola system will provide a university identification card and application platform, including the capability to access university services over the Internet.

Verid, a fingerprint verification product of TSSI, Swindon, United Kingdom, has been chosen as the biometric device to protect a new, highly secure engineering block at British Aerospace.

Southern California Edison has chosen Oakbrook Terrace, Ill.-based VASCO Data Security International Inc.'s SnareWorks software to provide e-commerce and enterprise-wide security for the company.

CSI Pacific Ltd., Hong Kong, has signed an agreement with Alcatel CGA Transport, for the design, installation, testing and commissioning of an electronic access control system for the Kowloon Canton Railway Corp. In July 1998, CSI Pacific opened a Hong Kong office after securing the contract to integrate its I/Net software with smart card technology for the MTRC, a trans- portation system that serves more than three million passengers a day. Kowloon Canton Railway Corp. project involves two phases, with Phase one valued at more than $5.5 million USD, for which CSI will install electronic access control in nine new stations and a depot for the Westrail Operating Line, with completion expected by September 2003. Phase two consists of 11 stations for the existing Eastrail Operating Line. Work on this phase is scheduled to begin in December this year with completion target date of September 2004.

The Royal Bank of Canada has licensed Nestor Inc.'s, Providence, R.I., PRISM 5.0 case management and workflow system to respond more effectively to high-risk transactions and minimize fraud-related charge-backs.
