ASIS International Releases Exam Dates for New Certifications

ASIS International has announced the dates and locations of exams for its two new technical certifications: Professional Certified Investigator (PCI) and Physical Security Professional (PSP).

These new designations will recognize the professional competency of two technical areas of the security industry, just as the CPP credential recognizes the professional competency of those in security management.

The PSP is targeted to those who conduct physical security surveys; design integrated security systems that include equipment, procedures, and people; or install, operate, and maintain those systems.

The PCI is directed at security professionals whose primary responsibility is to conduct investigations. It covers the tasks, knowledge, and skills necessary for case management, evidence collection, and case presentation.

Here are the locations and exam dates for ASIS certification courses in 2003:

PSP and PCI exams

  • July 19: Anaheim, Calif., and Washington, D.C.

  • Sept. 14: New Orleans, prior to the 2003 ASIS International Annual Seminar and Exhibits

  • Nov. 1: Atlanta, Dallas, Chicago, Las Vegas, St. Louis, San Francisco, Toronto and Vancouver, Canada.

CPP exams

  • Any time during the year (via scheduling) in more than 200 locations throughout the U.S. and Canada.

WBFAA Training Programs Approved

An apprenticeship and training program for fire/life safety technicians conducted by the Western Burglar and Fire Alarm Association (WBFAA) has been approved by the State of California Division of Apprenticeship Standards. The program is the result of nearly two years of work jointly sponsored by the California Alarm Association and California Automatic Fire Alarm Association.

“The approval of this program signals a new era for the growth of professionalism for the Fire/Life Safety industry,” says George Gunning, WBFAA president.

The WBFAA Apprenticeship Program offers a three-year curriculum of 525 hours of academic study and 6,000 hours of on-the-job training.

The WBFAA has begun accepting letters from companies to participate in the program. The WBFAA also offers pre-testing workshops along with refresher courses for individuals who have 4,000 hours of work experience and who will be required to sit for the California State Fire/Life Safety certification exam.

NFPA Releases Handbook

The National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) has published the 19th edition of its Fire Protection Handbook.

Last revised in 1997, the handbook now includes 200 chapters and five appendices prepared by 247 authors with expertise ranging from the fire safety of materials to fire department management. Nineteen chapters and one appendix are new; other chapters have been revised. The new two-volume format contains introductions and summaries for each chapter to make it easier to use.

NFPA's Web site (http://www.nfpa.org) features a variety of information about the handbook, including a list of new chapters and an interview with editor-in-chief Arthur E. Cote, P.E., NFPA's executive vice president.

The handbook is available in print or searchable CD-ROM format for $149.95 (NFPA member price $134.96) and may be ordered through NFPA's online catalog or by phone (1-800-344-3555).
