Innovation Corner: A Trim Biometric Sensor
Apr 1, 2007 12:00 PM
Biometric sensors have traditionally been made from thick and expensive silicon electronic components. However, Nanoident Biometrics uses printed optoelectronics to create ultra-thin biometric sensors. The company is developing a flexible multimodal fingerprint sensor that can be integrated directly with standard smart cards.
Commercialization of the printed manufacture of optoelectronic sensors will soon make ISO/IEC 7816-compatible System-on-Card solutions a reality. The manufacturing process also significantly reduces the cost of biometric sensors and enables manufacture of thin flexible sensors, creating new opportunities for biometric sensors to be embedded into mobile devices such as smart phones, laptops or PDAs for increased security.
The System-on-Card security solution consists of a thin and unbreakable fingerprint sensor and a highly integrated biometric controller with sufficient non-volatile memory for the storage of biometric templates. It is possible to integrate a complete biometric verification system into a smart card, thus eliminating the need for separate databases to store sensitive biometric information.
The multimodal biometric sensor in development at Nanoident Biometrics will detect surface fingerprints as well as blood-oxygen levels and underlying tissue structures. Combined, the simultaneous capture of fingerprint and unique skin properties significantly increases recognition accuracy, while the detection of blood parameters enhances protection against identity theft by means of a fake finger.
