Britain's Commonwealth Games to be screened with Rapiscan systems

The XVII Commonwealth Games to be held this summer in Manchester, U.K., will be protected by baggage and cargo screening systems from Rapiscan Security Products, Hawthorne, Calif., a subsidiary of OSI Systems Inc. Officials for the Games have also purchased archway metal detectors and handheld metal detectors to use for additional security at the event.

Scott and White Memorial Hospital, Temple, Texas, will deploy a customized, biometrically authenticated healthcare application from Identix Inc., Los Gatos, Calif., for use with its mobile healthcare provider workforce. The hospital has already deployed biometric software to 3,300 of its desktops and has ordered 100 BioTouch fingerprint cards with BioLogon authentication software. Additionally, six Veterans Administration Medical Centers have ordered live-scan applicant fingerprint systems from Identix to aid in employee background checks. Because Department of Veterans Affairs hospital employees fall under federal jurisdiction, they are required to undergo a background check prior to employment.

Kronos Inc., Chelmsford, Mass., has selected fingerprint identification technology from Bioscrypt Inc., Toronto, to incorporate into its Touch ID labor management systems.

The Harris County (Texas) Sheriff's Department has deployed facial recognition technology from Imagis Technologies Inc., Vancouver, to accurately identify felons and increase the efficiency of surveillance activities. The county will also deploy software from Imagis' parent company, Orion Scientific Systems, Sacramento, Calif.

The U.S. Air Force has selected 60,000 smart card readers from SCM Microsystems Inc., Fremont, Calif., and RMW Enterprises Inc., Silver Spring, Md., for deployment as part of the Department of Defense's Common Access Card program. SCM previously deployed 135,000 readers to the U.S. Army.

The Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigations has ordered an integrated live-scan system from Visionics Corp., Jersey City, N.J., that captures, prints and transmits fingerprints electronically.

Two French companies, Aeroports de Paris (ADP) and Service Technique des Bases Aeriennes (STBA), have ordered multiple explosives detection systems (EDS) from InVision Technologies Inc., Newark, Calif. The ADP operates the Charles de Gaulle and Orly international airports in Paris, while the STBA is responsible for the technical evaluation of aviation security technology throughout France. The STBA also purchases equipment for many French airports.

The city of West Hollywood (Calif.) has deployed a vertical lift bollard system from Delta Scientific Corp., Valencia, Calif., to ease traffic problems from the new Sunset Millennium Shopping Center off Sunset Blvd. The bollards can stop a 7.5-ton non-armored vehicle traveling at 62 mph. Additionally, used car retailer CarMax has chosen cable beam barricades and cantilever gates from Delta to be installed at 40 dealerships across the country to protect entrances and exits to parking lots and vehicle storage facilities.

The General Services Administration (GSA) has approved document verification technology from Intelli-Check Inc., Woodbury, N.Y., for direct sale to U.S. government agencies. Intelli-Check CEO Frank Mandelbaum says that the nation's airports and U.S. government installations are key market targets for the company's ID-Check unit, which authenticates the validity of driver's licenses and state-issued and military identification cards.

Communication facilities in India will be protected with digital video and audio, access control and perimeter protection systems from Magal Security Systems Ltd., Yahud, Israel. The order is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

A savings bank in southern California has ordered two-lane custom access control portals from Isotec Inc., a subsidiary of World Am Communications, Westminster, Colo. The access control portals reduce the possibility of unauthorized entry.

The Kroger Co., has selected biometric identity verification systems from Biometric Access Corp., Round Rock, Texas, for deployment in the Bryan/College Station (Texas) Kroger supermarkets. The system combines identity verification and electronic funds transfer to enable customers to pay for groceries without using a credit card or cash.

The Metropolitan Police Force, U.K., has ordered warrant cards and a networked pass issuing system from The Databac Group, Surrey, U.K., to be integrated with the Metropolitan Police's vetting system which authenticates personnel and contractor data.

The Los Angeles Civic Center area, which includes the City Hall and one of the city's major government buildings, is working with InfoGraphic Systems, Garden Grove, Calif., to deploy the Diamond II access control system as part of a $3.5 million city security modernization project. Once installed, the system will be monitored and operated from the city's new Security Command Center.

Schacter and Namdar, Israel's leading diamond manufacturer, has chosen the NiceVision Pro digital video recording platform from NICE Systems, Ra'anana, Israel, to secure its company headquarters, safe rooms and diamond trading offices in Ramat Gen, Israel.

San Diego's Fashion Valley Mall is launching a software program designed to increase facility security using Palm hand-held computers. The software, from San Diego-based TISCOR, replaces a paper-based security operation. The system allows mall employees to document and track security operations for the 200-store facility, including back corridors and parking garages.

The Laredo Housing Authority-Senior Citizens Home, Laredo, Texas, has installed a security system from Locknetics Security Engineering, the electronic locking systems component of IR Security and Safety Electronic Access Control Division, Forestville, Conn. The system serves a seven-story building and includes Schlage computer-managed locks, Locknetics magnetic locks and touchbars and LockLink Express software.

An office tower in Manhattan, N.Y., has ordered security systems from Diversified Security Solutions Inc., Saddle Brook, N.J., that include a turnstile system. Follow-up installations could include access control systems and CCTV monitoring for the building's lobby area.

Virgin Atlantic Airlines has chosen cockpit door surveillance systems from Goodrich Corp., Charlotte, N.C. The airline is the first transcontinental operator to fit its fleet with the systems.

TVL Inc., Vancouver, B.C., has selected a radio frequency identification (RFID) tagging system from Axcess Inc., Dallas, for integration into TVL's WiseTrack asset management software.

Checkpoint Systems Inc., Thorofare, N.J., has completed the installation of EAC/CCTV systems for Sears Canada's IT facilities. The system will secure three sites, including the retailer's central data center for its entire Canadian operations. Checkpoint's Threshold Enterprise EAC system allows Sears security staff to remotely monitor each building through the companies existing Wide Area Network (WAN).
