“It is imperative that we support our businesses throughout the entire region” said Comiskey. “Business owners in rural areas must be as prepared as those in the city”.

One initiative to help businesses throughout the region is the Coalition's Web site.

“When the Coalition first began, our Web site was primarily an informational site, providing information on the formation, membership, vision, mission and general areas of interest of the Coalition,” Comiskey says. “[We expanded the site] to contain important information for business to better prepare for disaster.”

Future plans

A fundamental for business is having a disaster preparedness plan. Many businesses do not have such a plan. This lack of fundamental planning is the focus of the coalition's early training and education efforts.

“There is an unfilled need in the Pittsburgh region for education and training opportunities for the business community relative to disaster planning,” Comiskey says. “The coalition is using several of its member companies, as well as Department of Homeland Security training materials, to bring disaster planning to business, with an early emphasis on small to mid-sized businesses.”

“The coalition is not about a small group of concerned business owners — it is about expanding our circle to include all community stakeholders in the region,” Comiskey adds. “The small business owner who does not have a staff dedicated to emergency preparedness also needs to be privy to all the resources and information. Communication is vital.”

“What we've accomplished so far is to create a model of how one community is working to make it happen,” Roth says. “We must build on that model and spirit of cooperation to ensure that all resources are brought to bear on the critical issues of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.”
