Commonwealth Games Covered by Extensive CCTV

A networked surveillance system combining new and existing CCTV systems gave organizers at the 18th Commonwealth Games in Melbourne, Australia, unprecedented vision during the events.

The Games were conducted over 12 days in March, with Melbourne playing host to more than 6,000 athletes and hundreds of thousands of spectators and staff.

Officials at the games deployed the intelligent Security Operations Center (iSOC) from DVTel Inc., Ridgefield Park, N.J. The system integrated key sites comprising hundreds of fixed and pan/tilt/zoom cameras, including the 50-acre Athletes Village and a network of cameras located around the city-designated “Public Domain,” which includes the huge Melbourne Cricket Ground that hosted the opening and closing ceremonies.

Along with the Village and Public Domain sites, the DVTel iSOC also integrated and managed cameras from Vic Roads (state organization which manages roads) and the Victoria Police Centre, giving centralized access to video streams from these cameras at a central control location called the Games Operations Centre (GOC), where cameras were monitored and recorded.

The Australian government coordinated critical information sharing and security planning as part of this work. The Australian Federal Police provided protective security, intelligence, investigative and technical support. “Planning security for such a high profile event took into account the possibility that new security threats could emerge with little or no warning,” the Australian government said in a statement. “Authorities were ready to respond if needed to any incident, which could range from a hoax to an act of terrorism.”
