SpectaGuard, a large Northeast contract security firm, expanded its security officer training program to include a continuous-learning correspondence course called the Self-Study Series.
"The response from our employees has been overwhelming," said Mike Phelan, vice president of training for the King of Prussia, Pa.-based company. "We have found that our men and women want to increase their knowledge and understanding about their profession. Our goal is to have the best trained and most efficient contract security staff."
In five months, some 3,200, or 40 percent, of SpectaGuard employees have begun the SpectaGuard University-developed Self-Study Series. Of the 3,200, more than 1,200 have completed the initial six volumes in the course and have earned admission in the "500 Club," indicating accumulation of at least 500 points from quiz results. SpectaGuard employees who have earned 500 Club admission range from Chief Executive Officer Al Berger to account managers to third-shift security officers.
The first six volumes in the self-study series cover topics ranging from customer service, quality report writing, appearance and professionals, preventing illegal harassment and telephone excellence to ethical conduct. Volumes seven through 11 will be released soon.
