Atlanta - Surveillance cameras near the site of a family planning clinic double bombing on January 16 failed to capture a picture of the bomber, according to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. But in what may be a break in the case, witnesses reported seeing a suspicious man, reportedly white or hispanic, crouched in the bushes at the clinic shortly before dawn on the day of the bombing, holding an implement of some kind. Agents have a composite sketch based on witness descriptions.
Washington - Security checkpoints at CIA headquarters were bypassed on December 23, 1996, by a man driving a pickup truck at high speed, according to The New York Times. The man cruised through and landed the truck on the building's front steps before being arrested by CIA guards. A CIA spokesman attributed the breach to failure to activate metal barriers in time because of the vehicle's speed.
New Orleans - Superbowl goers were largely unaware of surveillance cameras taking in the chaotic activity all around the Superdome on Superbowl Sunday, reports The Boston Globe. City, state and national law enforcement officials were assembled in what New Orleans Police Superintendent Richard Pennington called the largest [security team] ever fielded for a single event in the city's history.
New York - Students in New York City may soon use electronic swipe cards in place of student passes to ride on public transportation, reports The New York Times. Two versions of Metrocard will be given to a trial group of students before transit and school officials consider giving the card to all 500,000 students.
Charleston, N.C. - Security guards now man a downtown parking garage night and day after an early morning violent assault and car burglary, according to The Charleston Gazette. The city-owned building at Washington and Summers streets is staffed by officers from Security America Inc.
Denver - A security guard at Denver Wastewater Management was shot to death by a fellow employee January 17. The Rocky Mountain News reported that the suspect had been turned in by the victim for violating agency policy.
Spokane, Wash. - Three men being held without bail - for allegedly robbing and bombing a bank branch, and bombing a newspaper office and an abortion clinic - are being investigated in relation to the 1996 Olympics bombing in Atlanta's Centennial Park.
