Detroit — A 35-year-old man jumped a fence at Detroit City Airport and tried to board two private jets, police said. The man jumped a fence line and ran toward one of the planes before City Airport workers and airport police approached him. At that time, he ran toward a second plane that had its door open and was caught, police said.

Chicago — Amid heightened concerns about security in the subways, a pile of trash found near a pole marked “chaos” and some abandoned luggage prompted the Chicago Transit Authority to close the Red Line in the Loop for 90 minutes. The items turned out to be harmless, police said. But coming three days after Joseph Daniel Konopka, 25, who calls himself “Dr. Chaos,” was charged with stashing cyanide compounds in subway tunnels, CTA officials were quick to remove passengers from the underground stations and reroute trains.

Sacramento, Calif. — California Highway Patrol officers have begun flying aboard in-state commercial flights, Governor Gray Davis has announced. The California “Safe Skies” program is designed to bolster the Federal air marshal program. The specially-trained officers will carry firearms on the flights, and 7,000 CHP officers have entered the voluntary program, which received Federal Aviation Adminstration approval last month.

Coconut Creek, Fla. — A 34-year-old softball player turned himself in to police to face criminal charges of choking a 74-year-old umpire to unconsciousness during a coed game. Charles J. Mitchell was charged with aggravated battery on the elderly, a felony. Witnesses said he jumped onto the back of, knocked down, attacked and then choked Lester Barr during an adult softball game. Barr, who has 54 years of umpiring experience, lost consciousness for a short while and suffered a cracked kneecap and a shoulder injury, police said.
