Amapa, Brazil — Two-time America's Cup captain Peter Blake of New Zealand was killed by pirates during a robbery on his boat sailing on the Amazon River. Blake's 199-foot yacht was attacked by four men in a rubber dinghy. Blake was shot when he resisted the holdup, which netted the assailants a spare engine and a few wristwatches. The attackers were apprehended by Brazilian police a few days later.
Reading, Pa. — Two men were charged with disorderly conduct after a brawl outside a borough council meeting. The two men fought over differences in opinion on who should be elected mayor.
Provo, Utah — Two Brigham Young University students that threw a public dance without proper security precautions faced citations after law enforcement officers refused to accept their credentials as ministers. The ordinance states any public dance must have metal detectors, surveillance cameras and state-certified security guards — unless it is a church function. The students were ordained as ministers for the Universal Life Church in a 10-minute process on the Internet, in order to circumvent the ordinance and throw a Halloween party.
Bend, Ore. — Twenty-two auto dealerships installed motion detection equipment aboard select vehicles to curb a recent car theft problem. The plan worked when a truck was stolen from one of the dealerships and the motion detector alerted police. Officers found footprints in the snow and followed them several miles to a pair of men who were both arrested.
Bloomington, Ill. — A man was convicted of misdemeanor reckless conduct after he bumped a high school principal purposely with his car. Principal Jerry Crabtree attempted to stop Allen Monroe from driving on an access road by acting as a human shield. Monroe tried to drive around Crabtree unsuccessfully, so he revved his engine and drove forward, bumping Crabtree in the leg and forcing him to jump out of the way.
