Los Angeles — Unruly fans celebrating Mexico's victory in a soccer match tossed rocks and bottles and smashed store windows before being dispersed by police, authorities said. Four people were arrested. The melee began when about 1,000 soccer fans streamed into the city's central business district to celebrate Mexico's 3-0 win over Honduras, qualifying the team for the World Cup soccer finals. Although the celebration had been anticipated, Huntington Park officers were soon outnumbered as fans took over the street.
Santa Ana, Calif. — An apparent case of road rage in a Santa Ana parking lot landed four people in the hospital, one in jail and a car in the lobby of a discount store. Laval Duke Vallare, 39, was driving west through the parking lot of the Double Discount store when another car cut in front of him to pull into a parking spot in front of the store. Vallare apparently stopped his car, took a knife from the trunk and chased the driver of the other vehicle into the store. Then he got back into his car and rammed the other vehicle several times until it smashed through a plate-glass window and into the store, destroying a counter and several displays, police said.
Pottstown, Pa. — Two men ages 18 and 19 were arrested for armed robbery after stealing a bicycle from a 13-year-old boy at gunpoint. The victim told police he was riding his bike when he was approached by two men. One of the men said, “Give me your ride,” to which the victim replied, “Why should I?” according to police. In response to the victim's question, one of the men allegedly lifted his shirt, revealing two pistols in his waistband.
Oklahoma City, Okla. — For the second time in a month, a new police weapon in Oklahoma City has been used to safely subdue a person who threatened violence. The M-26 Taser, an electric gun that fires small barbs on wires to shock people, was used to take down a man with a machete who threatened to kill officers. Standing in the parking lot of a convenience store, the man waved a weapon and screamed at officers to shoot him or he'd kill them, according to a police report.
