The PathMinder line of optical turnstiles can detect a tailgate attempt when a person is as little as two inches behind the authorized entrant, according to manufacturer PathMinder Inc., Nepean, Ontario, Canada. The turnstiles are designed for high-traffic facilities that need to control access through open-to-the-public lobbies. Features include auto-calibration of beams and tailgate detection using "fuzzy logic." Lanes can be programmed for one or two-way traffic and for card presentation from either or both sides.

Safe Against False Entry (S.A.F.E.) portals are designed to function unattended. The line of portals, offered by Mosler Inc., Hamilton, Ohio, are made of corrosion-treated tempered or armored steel, with optional bullet-proof or tempered safety glass. Other options include occupancy sensors, weight monitors and access control devices. S.A.F.E. portal systems range from swing doors to multiple-door configurations that handle high-volume traffic.

The Apex Sliding Door Sensor System is an automatic door sensor that combines dual-technology detection and advanced serial communication, says maker Horton Automatics, Corpus Christi, Texas. The sensor uses microwave technology to detect traffic coming and going, and focused-differential, active infrared technology to detect a presence within the door's threshold. The microprocessors of the sliding door are connected through a dedicated serial link; the continuous communication means the sensor and the door are always informed of the other's status, and presence detection is always active, according to the company.

Fastlane optical turnstiles monitor the passage of individuals entering and leaving a building and detect unauthorized entry, tailgating, collusion, and time and attendance fraud, according to manufacturer SMF Security International Corp., Atlanta. The infrared turnstiles, which work with a variety of card reading technologies, can process up to one person per second, can be programmed to control traffic in one or both directions and have a quick-release base for temporary removal, according to the company. The turnstiles can send signals to activate alarms, CCTV cameras, lights and locks in the event of unauthorized activity.

The TOT-20 series of optical lanes includes programmable logic controllers, lane status lights, user-interface displays, audible chimes, alarm buzzers and sensor packages. Each lane can be one- or two-way controlled using most access control systems, according to manufacturer Tomsed Corp., Fuquay-Varina, N.C. Control panels for remote monitoring and adjustable operation are available. Tomsed Corp. has also added the Round Nose series to its waist-high turnstile product line. Available in stainless steel, brass and bronze with metal, Corian and stone tops, the tripod turnstiles employ the heavy-duty, modular operating mechanisms found in Tomsed transit turnstiles.

PNG optical portals feature glass panels that open in 0.5 seconds for uninterrupted passage of large numbers of authorized people, according to manufacturer Automatic Control Systems, Port Washington, N.Y. The bi-directional portals can accommodate any access control system, according to the maker. Anti-fraud features include a long corridor that stops piggybacking and a glass-panel configuration that prevents hopping over, says the company. Authorized personnel can move all doors to the open position in emergencies.
