Explosive Technology for Airports

The Australian Department for Transport and Regional Services is deploying explosives trace detectors from GE Ion Track, Plainville, Conn., at Australian international and domestic airport screening points.
“Trace detection technology will complement existing security measures to ensure the traveling public's safety,” John Anderson, Australia's Deputy Prime Minister, says. “The introduction of trace detection technology is an Australian government initiative — another safeguard in our layered approach to meeting new and emerging aviation security threats.”
GE Ion Track, a unit of GE Interlogix, has already supplied more than 60 of its desktop Itemiser3 explosives trace detectors to several airlines and airports in Australia for the traveling public and for screening air cargo.
“Trace detection provides a capacity to detect explosive materials on passengers and their carry-on luggage, complementing existing measures applying to checked baggage,” the Department for Transport and Regional Services says in a statement. “Trace detection is a critical part of the ongoing fight against terrorism and is about ensuring the effective detection of dangerous items at minimum delay to passengers.”
Anderson also notes that the implementation was the result of government and the industry's cooperative efforts.
“The government takes an intelligence-driven, risk-based approach to aviation security issues and is working with industry on a range of initiatives,” he says. “The assessment ensures a unified response to emerging threats.”
