Cyber-attacks on corporations' computer systems have stayed consistent, but their financial losses from such attacks have gone down, according to a recent Computer Security Institute (CSI) survey of government agencies, financial institutions, medical institutions, universities and U.S. corporations.
According to the survey, 530 respondents reported overall financial losses of $201,797,340, down significantly from last year's $455,848,000 reported by 503 respondents. Losses reported for financial fraud were down drastically, $9,171,400 compared to nearly $116 million last year.
Respondents reported that threats to their computer systems come from both inside and outside their electronic perimeter. Forty-five percent of respondents detected unauthorized access by insiders. For the fourth year in a row, more respondents (78 percent) cited their Internet connection as a frequent point of attack more so than their internal systems (36 percent).
