Funds still available for federally funded school officers On April 23, three days after the massacre at Columbine High School in Littleton, Colo., President Clinton announced that $70 million in Justice Department funds will be provided to 336 communities to hire 604 school resource officers. The money is allocated under the COPS in Schools program initiated last October. The program, which takes its name from the acronym for community-oriented policing services, has funded more than 92,000 officers since its inception. Funds are still available, and the application deadline for the next round of grants is June 4.
