Protests thwarted at World Economic Forum The small ski village of Davos, Switzerland hosted almost 2,500 politicians, business people and cultural leaders at the 31st World Economic Forum in January. Street demonstrations were banned and local police, along with reinforcements from neighboring Liechtenstein, lay barbed wire barricades and checked all incoming motorists. Some 100 protesters held a rally and were subsequently arrested. Protests were staged in Brazil where a rival World Social Forum took place.

Anti-semitic gunman pleads guilty Buford O. Furrow, accused of opening fire at a Jewish day care and murdering a Filipino-American postal employee, has pleaded guilty to the crimes. His guilty plea to 16 federal counts spared him a possible death sentence. He will serve a mandatory life sentence without any chance of parole. Furrow had been active in the white supremacist organization Aryan Nation.

Hackers infiltrate Microsoft Web sites Hackers cut off access to some of Microsoft's Web sites on January 25. According to Microsoft, the hackers pounded some routers with a denial of service attack. Routers direct Web surfers to a site. The denial of service attacks flooded the system with so much data that traffic was almost completely halted.

In response to recent workplace-related tragedies in Boston and in Philadelphia, the American Society of Industrial Security (ASIS) will host a workplace violence seminar on March 1 in Washington, D.C.

The program will offer insights into preventing, preparing and/or handling a workplace violence event. It is targeted to professionals responsible for responding to workplace violence issues, including corporate security directors, human resource professionals, corporate counsels, corporate executive and mid-level managers, mental health professionals, and employee assistance professionals.

Presented by security experts who routinely confront and plan for workplace violence issues, the program will provide insight into managing cases of threat and harassment.

Sessions scheduled for the seminar include:

- basic principles of workplace violence assessment and management;

- behavior and risk indicators;

- assessment and psychological factors;

- stalking; and

- crisis management.

According to statistics by the Bureau of Labor, 22 million workers are assaulted annually, 6.3 million are threatened, and 16.1 million harassed.

ISC security expos cancelled in Chicago, Miami Association Exposition and Services (AE&S) has cancelled its ISC security expos in Chicago and Miami. The events were cancelled in favor of integrating the two regional events into the larger and ISC East and West shows. Also, the Home Automation Show Conference will co-locate with ISC Expo East and West this year.

AE&S will work closely with the Security Industry Association (SIA), the events' official sponsor, in offering attendees and exhibitors who have already signed up for the Chicago and Miami events the opportunity to participate in the ISC Expo/East and West shows. The AE&S marketing team will focus on expanding the reach of its larger events into the Southeast and Midwest markets.
