International trade conference draws protests Forty-seven people were arrested on charges of rioting and disorderly conduct Nov. 18 at a protest at an international trade conference in Cincinnati. The Transatlantic Business Dialogue meeting attracted about 90 corporate executives from Europe and the United States and about 100 international trade officials. The rally, organized by the Coalition for the Humane Economy, was attended by 300 to 400 people, some of whom were also arrested for forging fake press passes.
Fire at Vail Mountain forces evacuation A fire broke out at a ski resort in Vail, Colo., on Nov. 18, forcing the evacuation of the 350-room hotel, including 160-180 guests. The fire burned for more than four hours and destroyed the upper floors and the roof. Damage to the Marriott Vail Mountain Resort was estimated at $12 million to $20 million.
French judge orders Yahoo to block access to Nazi sites A French judge has confirmed a ruling he issued in May ordering American Internet service provider Yahoo to prevent users in France from accessing English-language sites where Nazi memorabilia is for sale. The judge ordered that the ISP install a filter system that registers keywords to block access to the sites by French users.
A French law prohibits the exhibition or sales of objects that potentially incite racial hatred.
