Going Mobile: Wireless Technology A Proactive Tool

“Now, more than ever, we need to provide proactive solutions rather than be reactive,” says Darcy Kernaghan, president/CEO and founder of Securiguard, a Vancouver, B.C. guard services company.

One such proactive tool is software developed by Scion Communications, Vancouver, B.C., that enables security guards and managers to perform critical tasks in a mobile environment with the help of wireless technology.

Equipped with a wireless hand-held device loaded with Scion Falcon software, a guard can monitor security camera feeds, submit incident reports, communicate via instant messaging (including images and audio), send emergency alerts and access vital information (e.g. access card data) in real-time while on the move. Integration with access control systems allows guards the opportunity to remotely control entry doors, and future releases will also include a global positioning system (GPS) to enhance employee safety and accountability.

Security managers benefit by gaining new tools to improve team communication and collaboration and guard productivity. From a desktop PC or wireless Web tablet, managers may assign tasks and schedule activities for any guard in the system, in real-time. If an emergency occurs, bulletins containing voice, text and images can be broadcast immediately to all staff.

“We seek tools and technology (like this) to help us enhance our services, reduce risk for customers and optimize operation without stretching our customers' budgets,” says Kernaghan.

An important feature of the Scion Falcon software, Kernaghan says, is the fact that all activity can be logged. “Every photograph that's taken, every message that's exchanged, every digital incident report that's submitted, is captured in a database,” she says. “This means we can now generate statistical reports and provide detailed, real-time data.”
