SECURITY EVENTS ROUNDUP

Organizers for the U.S. LAW and GOVSEC trade shows that will be held May 25-26 at the Washington D.C., Convention Center have announced a law enforcement competition and keynote speakers for the events.

The Law Enforcement Officer Performance and Reaction Drill, also known as the LEOPARD Challenge, will hold its Mid-Atlantic regional qualifying event at U.S. LAW. All LEOPARD Challenge competitors who want to participate in the 2005 U.S. National Championships, televised on ESPN, must participate in one of the regional qualifying events. All registered U.S. LAW, GOVSEC or READY Expo attendees are eligible to run the LEOPARD Challenge course, which costs $15.

The LEOPARD Challenge is a competition based on physical skills routinely encountered in the law enforcement setting. It demonstrates the highest level of police officer fitness, giving participants a chance to race against the clock and each other, and sequentially negotiate a series of linked policing tasks.

The LEOPARD Challenge will take place from 10 a.m.-12:30 p.m. on May 26.

Keynote and special session presentations are scheduled by experts including Tommy Thompson, former secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services; U.S. Representative Christopher Cox, chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security; Richard Clarke, former counterterrorism czar under Presidents G.W. Bush and Clinton; and Charles S. Phalen Jr., assistant director, Security Division, FBI.

Thompson and Cox will speak at 12:45 p.m. on May 25; Clarke will speak at 11 a.m. on May 26; and Phalen will speak at 7:30 a.m. on May 25.

ISC-WEST A SUCCESS

The latest ISC-West show, April 6-8 at the Sands Convention Center, Las Vegas, included 825 exhibitors (239 new) and more than 21,000 industry professionals in attendance.

“The data revealed that the ISC West core attendee, the security dealer-installer (24 percent) and integrator (26 percent) combined, made up a healthy 50 percent of the attendance at the event,” says Dean Russo, vice president for ISC events.

In addition, the corporate end-user made up 23 percent of the total attendance number. Of the remaining percentage of attendees, 8 percent comprised distributors while the remaining figures included job categories such as central station, electrical contractor and guard services.
