Honeywell division to secure facilities along 48-mile Panama Canal

The Panama Canal Authority has selected access control and CCTV technology from the Automation and Control Solutions division of Honeywell Intl., Morristown, N.J. The project will provide security for multiple facilities spanning the 48 miles of the canal, where more than 12,000 vessels pass yearly.

Los Angeles Pierce College, a community college, has increased security with locking systems from Locknetics Security Engineering, Forestville, Conn., the locking systems component of IR Security and Safety's Electronic Access Control Division. The 420-acre college uses Schlage Computer-Managed locks with heavy-duty mortise locksets and Locknetics LockLink software. Additionally, The University of Texas at San Antonio has implemented a similar system using Locknetics technology and Schlage locks.

Phoenix Security Group Ltd., Arlington, Va., has installed digital wireless video products manufactured by SmartSight Inc., Montreal, in apartment complexes and a foreign government compound in the greater Washington D.C. area.

The U.S. Navy has purchased explosives detection and identification systems from Ion Track Instruments, Wilmington, Mass., to secure Navy facilities and ships. Under a Department of Defense directive, the Navy is responsible for testing and evaluating explosives detection systems for all branches of U.S. Military Services.

SEA Societa Esercizi Airport in Italy and El Al Israel Airlines have ordered multiple CTX explosives detection systems from InVision Technologies Inc., Newark, Calif. Additionally, the Canadian Aviation Transportation Security Administration (CATSA) has ordered explosives detection systems for in-line automated baggage screening.

Viisage Technology Inc., Littleton, Mass., has selected a secure inventory and fulfillment management system from KeyCommerce Inc., Nashua, N.H., for use at its secure digital ID business.

The Oakland County Courts and Law Enforcement Management Information Systems (CLEMIS), a consortium of more than 175 law enforcement agencies across five counties in Michigan, has ordered 10 Live Scan FingerPrinter CMS systems and live scan system upgrades from Visionics Corp., Jersey City, N.J. The system captures, prints and transmits fingerprints without the use of ink. Additionally, the federal Belgian Police has nearly completed a roll-out of its Central Picture System, a national law enforcement mug shot software system using Visionics' FaceIt technology.

Philadelphia International Airport, Charlottesville-Albemare Airport (Va.), Laurence G. Hanscom Field (Bedford, Mass.) and Tulsa International Airport (Okla.) have ordered fingerprint biometric technology from Identix Inc., Los Gatos, Calif., to aid in the rapid processing of employee background checks. Additionally, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has contracted Sylvan/Identix to provide fingerprint-based applicant background checks for employees, volunteers and applicants.

A U.S federal agency has initiated two pilot projects using Smart&Secure radio frequency identification (RFID) technology from Mikoh Corp., McLean, Va. One project will use the technology to identify and monitor vehicles. The other will use the technology to seal protective cases.

To strengthen system security, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has implemented the Secure Executive Toolset system from The Titan Corp., San Diego, which incorporates iris recognition to confirm identity and allow access across the FAA Intranet. The FAA has also extended a contract for Raytheon Co., Burlington, Mass., to continue installation of explosives detection equipment at airports in the U.S.

The U.S. Air Force has continued its order with Electronic Data Systems, Plano, Texas, to serve as the Air Force's provider of middleware technology and smart card readers for the service-wide implementation of the Department of Defense's smart card initiative.

The U.S. Postal Service has formed a team to test an automated bio-agent detection system developed for use with large-scale mail sorting equipment. Led by Northrop Grumman Corp., Baltimore, the program is a collaborative effort by Sceptor Industries Inc., Kansas City, Mo., Cepheid, Northrop Grumman's Automation and Information Systems Division, and Environmental Technologies Group Inc., Edgewood, Md.

The Isle of Capri casino, Westlake, La., has deployed wireless radio frequency identification (RFID) tags from Axcess Inc., Dallas, which are attached to slot machine keys to keep them on the premises.

The U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has selected Lockheed Martin, Gaithersburg, Md., to upgrade passenger security measures at airports and help convert passenger screening operations throughout the U.S. to federal control.

The San Diego Police Department is using a vehicle tracking and recovery system from Satellite Security Systems of North America LLC, San Diego, to fight vehicle theft. The system notifies the police of a “bait car” being tampered with and can track the vehicle wherever it is taken throughout North America.

Major car manufacturer Audi will implement biometric fingerprint technology from Siemens Biometrics, Munich, into its automobiles. The system is designed to enable passengers to make comfort setting adjustments with a fingerprint sensor in the center console of the sedan.

SCM Microsystems Inc., Fremont, Calif., and RMW Enterprises Inc., Silver Spring, Md., have partnered to deploy 60,000 SCM smart card readers to the U.S. Air Force. The technology is being implemented as part of the Department of Defense's Common Access Card program.

In order to perform security background checks on more than 70,000 people, the Salt Lake Organizing Committee — responsible for staffing the 2002 Winter Games in Salt Lake City — turned to an identify verification tool used for background checks from Hollister, Calif.-based PeopleWise.

MEAG Power, which provides electricity to more than 750,000 Georgians, has selected services from Convergint Technologies, Chicago, a partner of Lenel Systems Intl. Inc., Rochester, N.Y., to provide security at MEAG's Atlanta headquarters.

Tishman Speyer Properties has awarded a contract for a new security system at New York's Rockefeller Center to TAC Americas, Dallas. The six-square-block area hosts tenants that include NBC and Radio City Music Hall. TAC's I/Net solution will incorporate proximity cards and a video ID system.

Anaheim's Arrowhead Pond, home to the National Hockey League's Anaheim Mighty Ducks, has chosen Handkey II hand geometry readers from IR Recognition Systems, Campbell, Calif., to protect access to the complex. Recognition Systems has also teamed with Diebold Inc., Canton, Ohio, to incorporate hand geometry readers and a biometric-based self-service safe deposit box system for the East Memphis branch of the First Tennessee Bank.

Three central Texas convenience stores owned by Dennis Smart have chosen computer-based surveillance technology from Salient Systems Inc., Austin, Texas. The system uses a high-speed Internet or Intranet connection to enable monitors to watch, record and save digital video from their personal computers.
