Identity Theft Protection at Your Fingertips

SPOTLIGHT: Diebold identiCenter

Banking institutions now have another method of protecting client account information from identity thieves. The Diebold identiCenter, powered by US Biometrics, Naperville, Ill., provides identity theft protection that integrates fingerprint biometric technology with third-party teller software platforms to enable a financial institution to positively identify almost every customer that enters the branch. The product links an individual's identity and account information to his or her fingerprint profile. When a customer arrives at a bank to complete a financial transaction, a teller verifies his or her identity using an optical-scan fingerprint reader. Only after verification occurs does the customer's account information appear automatically on the teller's screen, thus allowing a transaction to occur.

Customers must enroll in the system by having three fingerprint images scanned. The images are then converted into algorithmic values and stored in an encrypted and compressed database. To further protect customer information, the bank will delete the original fingerprint images from its records, leaving only those algorithmic values, which cannot be converted back into fingerprints.

Brad Stephenson, vice president of Diebold's Physical Security Group, says the product reduces the number of fraudulent transactions stemming from identity theft. “In a world where PINs, bank cards, social security numbers and account numbers too often fall into the wrong hands, identiCenter can reduce fraudulent transactions, minimize losses from fraud and increase consumer confidence by verifying consumers' identities,” he says. The identiCenter can also be configured to help streamline service and banking operations. An optional self-service kiosk enables customers to “check-in” upon arrival, verify their identity and select their transaction options before reaching the teller. identiCenter, Diebold Inc.
