Passwords and other precautions are used to protect the sensitive information on our computers, and yet how often do we print documents in common areas for all the world to see? A company that addressed the problem is L-3 Government Services Inc., a Chantilly, Va.-based management and services company. Charles Jarrow, an L-3 Government Services vice president, says company managers needed to keep confidential documents from being read by unauthorized people at the printer. The company chose SecurePrint from Silex Technology, Salt Lake City, a biometric system that places a hold on the printing process until a user verifies his or her fingerprint at a reader installed on the network-attached printer. Following enrollment, documents can be printed to a networked printer and retrieved by touching the reader at the printer.
“One of the key aspects to SecurePrint is the fact that our managers can print using the secure functionality to keep certain documents confidential, or they can print normally, bypassing the fingerprint requirement for documents that do not require the extra security,” Jarrow says. “It is an exceptionally attractive and inexpensive solution within evolving environments where new legislation, such as HIPAA and SOX, create new and immediate security requirements.” The company plans to equip all of its local, state and federal government clients with the technology.
