IP Video Solves Schools' Compatibility Issues

The Ramapo and Indian Hills school districts in New Jersey have installed more than 140 cameras at the two high school campuses. However, like many school districts around the United States, Ramapo and Indian Hills were forced to combine various security hardware that does not necessarily fit together, work effectively or meet potential future security management demands.

Few superintendents have a blank check to just get rid of everything and start over. Instead, IP network technology and integrated network video management systems have provided a solution.

At Ramapo High School, administrators decided to deploy the Latitude Network Video Management System (NVMS) from DVTel, Paramus, N.J. The system is an enterprise-level IP video and audio monitoring, recording and storage solution that provides audio and data transmission and management across an IP network while integrating with existing equipment and systems.

“We wanted a system that combined proactive and reactive capabilities,” says Richard Edwards, director of technology for the Ramapo and Indian Hills districts. “On the proactive side, we have coverage of key areas and the ability to access cameras anywhere along the network over the Internet. It helps us provide law enforcement with any access they might need.”

The system also allowed the two schools to deploy relatively expansive CCTV networks without installing miles of cable to cover the expansive grounds. The system covers the multi-building campuses with a centralized system.

The system has helped the schools to reduce theft and vandalism, to provide a safe environment for students and staff, and to provide remote access for school administrators and law enforcement.
