Access Control & Security Systems Integration interviewed Peter M. Draghetti, a laminated glass consultant in Westmoreland, N.H., recipient of the 2000 American Society for Testing and Materials Award of Merit from the ASTM committee F12 on Security Systems and Equipment.
Q. What issues related to glass or glazing did you discuss in the international symposia with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) when you were chairman of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) Com- mittee F12?
A. There is a subcommittee for explosives and vapor detection which formed an alliance with the FAA. My role was confined to glass glazing which is my specialty. We discussed the need for safety glass in airports to protect luggage, passengers and employees.
Q. What new applications do you see arising in the security industry for glass glazing?
A. Given the increased incidence of explosives and armed attacks where they report glass shattering and glass shards flying everywhere, I expect that new glazing techniques will be used in architectural applications in politically sensitive areas of the world. Terrorism is just not going away.
Q. Is there a single greatest breakthrough in glass glazing in the last 50 years?
A. The greatest advances have come in the development of composites where we have combined existing materials with plastics or other materials.
Q. Describe your involvement with the ASTM.
A. I have been active with the ASTM since 1981 and I've been a member of three active committees: committee F12 on security systems and equipment, C14 on glass and glass products and E06 on performance of buildings. I've served as first vice chairman of the committee F12 twice and as chairman from 1990-96.
Q. Are you interested in other the facets of glass making?
A. I have an interest in the design of armored cars with bullet-resistant windows.
