Outsmarting Smart Card Skimmers

Spotlight: Brady People ID Secure Badgeholder

A “skimmer” is an electronic device that thieves use to swipe and store unauthorized information from credit cards, drivers' licenses and passports to aid in identity theft and credit card fraud. In recent years, skimmers have turned their focus to contactless smart cards in order to gain unauthorized access to information stored on PIV and CAC cards and other similar user access cards.

To combat this trend, Brady People ID, Burlington, Mass., has developed a secure employee ID badgeholder that provides a shield from data skimmers. “Gone are the days of skimming information from contactless smart cards,” says Bill Kieckhafer of Brady Corp. “With the implementation of the Secure Badgeholder, government employees, consumers, business executives and security professionals alike no longer need to worry about combating identity theft.”

The rigid badgeholder provides a barrier to unknown and unauthorized communications throughout the contactless interface. Though the card is shielded, the holder enables card reading without having to remove the card by squeezing the holder's activation tabs. Once the tabs are released, the smart card is shielded again. The badgeholder is also weather- and water-resistant. It holds PIV cards securely in place, while enabling one-handed removal of the card when necessary.
