A “skimmer” is an electronic device that thieves use to swipe and store unauthorized information from credit cards, drivers' licenses and passports to aid in identity theft and credit card fraud. In recent years, skimmers have turned their focus to contactless smart cards in order to gain unauthorized access to information stored on PIV and CAC cards and other similar user access cards.

The rigid badgeholder provides a barrier to unknown and unauthorized communications throughout the contactless interface.
