What can the government learn from the world of corporate security? We asked security industry readers that question recently in an e-mail poll and received some interesting answers, including the following:

• “Governmental agencies tend not to see the broad picture in addressing certain access control technologies.”

• “Government tends to see things from a narrower perspective. Corporate security professionals are better situated to see the overall picture of security, profits, and function of the company.”

• “Government should learn that its first priority ought to be programs and/or systems that offer the greatest return on investment (ROI) in reducing or eliminating an area of risk.”

• “The government should go for help to the security professionals and not other government agencies who claim they are security professionals unless they have the credentials to back up their claims such as certification, training and experience.”

• “The government should learn that there is an entire industry of security professionals who, in many cases, have spent a considerable amount of their lives learning about security.”

• “Do it right, do it once, and don't be too quick with ‘new’ or ‘improved’ (often unproven) technology. Remember to get the bugs out before it goes out in the field.”

Clearly there is a lot security professionals can learn from each other, whether they serve in the public or private sector. Public servants in the security realm deserve both our thanks and the very best leadership and technology our industry can provide. Security is a worthy calling in the year 2003, as well as being big business.
