Preventing Corporate Embezzlement by Paul Shaw and Jack Bologna Butterworth-Heineman, 2000.

Providing a blueprint for identifying actual and potential embezzlers, the authors detail the psychological portrait of the embezzler. They list his motives, his habits, and the possible mistakes he might make which could aid in his capture. According to the authors, the typical embezzler is a long-time, trusted employee, who is devoted to job and company. He is known to live beyond his means and is often solely responsible for bookkeeping. Red flags when a potential embezzler interviews for a position are gaps in his employment record and only one or two references.

The book offers entertaining summaries of successful embezzlements. The authors cover patterns of embezzlement and ways to detect embezzlement. In addition, they describe proper auditing techniques to prevent embezzlement and provide check-lists for inventory, accounts payable and accounts receivable procedures.

The book single-minded endorses incorporation of theft-deterrence into organizational policy. A company must demonstrate that theft is not permitted and will be punished swiftly and harshly. The authors cite instances in which company property can be appropriated and the individual responsible for the theft can go unpunished. A lack of solid deterrent encourages embezzlement. Legal definitions of fraud, embezzlement and larceny aid the reader in determining if embezzlement has taken place, and guides to a company's legal rights will help the conscientious security director investigate the crime.

Paul Shaw is the editor and publisher of several periodicals including Computing & Communications: Law and Protection, Financial Fraud, and Assets Protection. Jack Bologna is an associate professor of management at Siena Heights College, Adrian, Michigan and a publisher of the monthly newsletters Forensic Accounting Review and Computer Security Digest.
