"Practical Security Training" by Patrick Kane.

255 pages. Butterworth-Heinemann, 2000.

In this handbook, the author draws on his experiences as a Marine to provide solutions to security issues in the workplace. Mr. Kane is sensitive to the challenges of teaching security techniques to adults and suggests ways to improve training of security personnel. A valuable feature of the book is the case studies of well-known emergencies such as the World Trade Center bombing, the Sarin gas attack in the Tokyo subway and the Oklahoma City bombing. Each case study recounts the details of the catastrophe and provides study questions to determine possible solutions to a similar incident. The book also provides hypothetical, everyday emergency situations such as an intoxicated employee or an employee who is being stalked. Each short example details a possible incident and is followed by questions on the appropriate reaction by a security professional. Such examples identify situations that the average security professional will surely face on-the-job, and make the book practical and useful. The range of possible scenarios is impressive and even includes such arcane problems as enforcing security measures with a foreign visitor who doesn't speak English and handling security issues confronting employees deployed abroad. The drills and scenarios will teach the novice about the security field and provide a refresher course in key security principles and techniques to more experienced professionals. The book is a clearinghouse for information on security associations, training institutes, industry publications and Web sites. The appendices provide step-by-step instructions for routine duties.

Patrick Kane, CPP, is a security services manager in New York City. He is a former Marine Corps officer and is a member of the American Society for Industrial Security, the International Association of Counterterrorism and Security Professionals and the Academy of Security Educators and Trainers.

Have you ever started to register for a conference and suddenly found yourself staring doe-eyed at a list of eight or ten hotels in an unfamiliar city? How do you choose?

Available soon to offer a solution will be TravelFox.com.

Billed as the "only independent source of hotel security information," the company's goal is to assign a security risk rating to "every guest room at every major hotel in the world." The Website will offer hotel fact sheets including crime index ratings for the local and metro areas, risk ratings for nearby hotels, warnings of areas to avoid, reviews of guest security and a list of rooms deemed unacceptable because of location and/or security defects.

How will the site collect such information? Explains Dr. Terry Riley, principal of applied psychology.com, which will produce the site: "TravelFox uses a proprietary methodology to combine the worldwide, data-collection capability of the Internet with public and private sources of information to assign security risk ratings to individual hotel guestrooms."

In addition to available statistics, TravelFox gets its in- formation from business travelers. Members are provided with free access to the risk ratings in exchange for completing a four minute survey on hotels they stay in. That information is combined with other data to determine hotel guestroom risk ratings, which are then furnished to third parties for a fee.

TravelFox is currently in the beta testing stage. During the test period, membership is free and the risk ratings are unavailable. For information, visit www.travelfox.com.
