Port of Palm Beach Plans Surveillance

Handling more than 200,000 passengers annually and more than 4 million tons of cargo per year, the Port of Palm Beach (Fla.) is among the 25 busiest container ports in North America.
The port has selected to install a video surveillance system from ADT Security Services Inc., Boca Raton, Fla., a part of Tyco Fire & Security, to enhance security.
The security enhancements are being funded through a grant from the federal Transportation Security Administration (TSA). The system will include surveillance cameras, a digital video recorder and the needed cabling and wireless technology designed to give port security officials the ability to view and record events throughout the port's roughly 100 acres of restricted area.
Installation is already under way.
The Port of Palm Beach is the fourth busiest container port in Florida and the 18th busiest in the continental U.S. In addition to intermodal capacity, the Port is a major nodal point for the shipment of bulk sugar (domestic usages), molasses, cement, utility fuels, water, produce and breakbulk items. The Port has three slips, four marginal wharves and two ro/ro ramps for a total of 5,200 linear feet of berthing space.
The Florida East Coast Railway Company (FEC) services the docks and piers through the Port's industrial rail switching operations. It is the only port facility in South Florida operating a rail system with pier-side box, hopper and intermodal cars operating 24 hours a day. Located on Port property are six miles of trackage for intermodal transfers and handling.
“We have been well served by ADT's familiarity with the federal grant administration process,” says Lori Baer, executive director for the Port of Palm Beach.
